Some best practices for fighting White Flies.

by Rincon-Vitova Insectary

Whiteflies

Whiteflies are not flies but are related to honeydew producing pests like aphids, scales, mealybugs. They have piercing, needlelike mouthparts to suck sap from plants. Large populations can cause plant distortion, discoloration, yellow or silvering of leaves, leaves to fall off plants, and serious crop losses. Some whiteflies transmit viruses to certain vegetable crops. Most common species, Greenhouse and sweet potato (=tobacco/bemesia tabaci) Silverleaf (Bemesia agentifolii) whitefly, have a wide host range. Whiteflies breed all year round in warmer parts of California, moving from one host to another as plants are harvested or dry up.

Identification

Adults are 1/16 inch long moth-like insects with yellowish bodies, short antennae, and white wings.

Nymphs are wingless, flat, oval-shaped and almost resemble scale insects.

All stages feed by sucking plant juices from leaves and excrete honeydew, which often attracts ants.

Knowing is half the battle when it comes to fighting Earwigs in our gardens.

By Rincon-Vitova Insectary

Earwigs

Easily recognizable pests in the garden and active at night, earwigs hide in tight, dark, moist places during the day. True omnivores, they actually are important predators of aphids, insect eggs, but will eat almost all parts of flowering plants, especially soft tissue, like newly forming buds in cannabis.

Identification

The adult body is about 3/4 inch long and reddish brown.

Most species have wings under short, hard wing covers, but they seldom fly.

Two appendages that resemble forceps at the tail end of body are used for defense, mating, and capturing prey.

Controlling Grasshoppers in our gardens

by Rincon-Vitova Insectary

Grasshoppers

Most grasshoppers are general feeders, but they prefer young green plants and some annual flowers. Chewing mouthparts make large, round, smooth holes in leaves. Heavy infestations can strip plants to stalks. During major outbreaks they feed on almost any green plant, and damage may occur over a considerably longer period.

Identification

Hind legs, have greatly enlarged femurs, are well adapted for jumping.

Antennae are relatively short versus crickets and katydids, which have long antennae.

Most are winged and are good fliers, although a few species are flightless.

Show Notes:  Welcome to Ep. 126.  Later I got Patrick Goggins back.  CannaQueen is starting her own YouTube show and I’ll be co-host.  It’s called “Candid with Canna Queen”.  We’re going to be live at 9pm EST. 6pm PST.  Unpack taster pack and product reviews.  Dosist vape cartridge..taste like pine lemon to me

Social Media: We are doing a seed giveaway with Canna Queen Genetics check the shows IG account @inmygrowshow for the repost and rules.  One lucky winner will win a pack of Butter Cream Haze seeds and a pack of Queen White Haze seeds also.  Winner will be announced on ep. 127.

Strain of the Week:  Hazel Berry a.k.a.Haze Berry – Sativa dominant cross between Super Silver Haze and the famous Blueberry.  17.5 THC.  To me it smelled like pine trees and sugar.  The flower looked great and the flavor was mostly pine.  The high was nice, wasn’t too racey and the come down was smooth, not a crash.  It was a decent high for the price, $35.  I did have one issue with it.  I was surprised that it was dry when I opened it, even with a humidity pack.  That tells me it’s been sitting in the package for awhile.  Packaged in June
