Strain of the Week: Hell Fire – a.k.a the “Hellfire OG,” is an indica dominant hybrid (70% indica/30% sativa) strain which is a cross of Rascal’s OG Kush X SFV OG Kush and came in at 27% THC.  The high from this smoke came on quickly and it gave me some fierce couchlock.  Which made it  great for the end of day when I was ready to let it all go.  Hell’s Fire is said to be perfect for treating conditions such as chronic stress, muscle spasms or tremors, inflammation, and chronic pain. This bud has a sweet lemony, piney diesel flavor and aroma.

Strain of the Week:  Banana Dream:  sativa dominant hybrid strain (80% sativa/20% indica) It’s a cross of Blue Dream X Banana Cheese strains.  It has a fruity, piney and funky cheese aroma and flavor.  This flower has a 25% THC and the high started out in the back of my head swept forward to my eyeballs. I like it for that middle of day smoke break and the high wasn’t distracting.  The internet says that Banana Dream is often chosen to treat conditions such as chronic fatigue, depression, chronic pain, and migraines or headaches.

Show Notes:  Welcome to Ep. 152.  Thank you for hanging out.  I know the show schedule has been a little erratic.  It’s been busy around here and I’m dealing with a family medical issue, so all my time has been dedicated to dealing with that.  So thanks again for taking the time to watch and listen.  Later I will talk a little more about the cannabis plant in veg.   

Strain of the Week:   Durban Poison – Has a piney, wet dirt almost wet forest smell and taste and originates from the South African port city of Durban. It’s said that Ed Rosenthal, an American cannabis activist, discovered the original strain and brought in back to the United States in the 1970s.  It has a strong, energetic happy head high that’s great for creativity and daytime use.  It didn’t get in the way of my day but you gotta be careful.   It has a 23% THC so paranoia may be a possible side effect if you’re new to cannabis.  The internet says that Durban Poison is an effective treatment for depression and anxiety, as well as chronic pain, and it can also be helpful with nausea.

Show Notes:   welcome to Ep. 137.  So my old computer ate the audio version of last week’s show.  Luckily I found a way to edit it on my phone using Adobe Premiere Rush that came with my Creative Cloud.  It came out ok, not bad for a phone app and my first time using it.  I will go back and re-edit that episode when the new laptop comes in.  I bought a new laptop for the show, a huge thank you to all of you who were able to contribute financially to make that happen.  Since the new laptop doesn’t come in for a few more days which means this episode will also be edited on my phone.

Strain of the Week:  Watermelon Gelato: cross of Watermelon Zkittlez x Gelato 45.  The flower had a fruity, earthy smell and taste with a hint of fuel at the very end of the exhale.  It was a bit of a sativa leaning with a 23%THC, but it didn’t make me anxious and I found it easy to get computer work done.

Show Notes:  Welcome to Ep. 134.  Today is a different show.  I talk with Aaron Agustis who is the founder of Veterans Cannabis Group (https://veteranscannabisgroup.com/) and a veteran himself of “ Operation Iraquie Freedom”.  We had an honest conversation about some of his experiences as a soldier and as a veteran returning home from a war zone.  He also shares some of the things to expect from the VA concerning cannabis.

HR 712 VA medical cannabis research Act of 2019 

This bill requires the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to conduct a clinical trial of the effects of medical-grade cannabis on the health outcomes of covered veterans diagnosed with chronic pain, and also those diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Covered veterans are those who are enrolled in the VA patient enrollment system for hospital care and medical services.

Strain of the Week:  Autumn OG – Great looking flower that came in at 26% THC.  This is seem to be Autumn Brands version of the OG kush.  It has that earthy, piney, touch of musky odor and taste.  This is a heavy smoke, not a “get to work” weed, I was lit like a christmas tree.  It came on fast and strong and kept me there but the come down wasn’t a crash’n’nap time.  It was a nice gradual step back down to sober.

Mexico –  Chamber of Deputies hearings – Which are the Deputies of Justice, Health, Human Rights and Budget and Public Accounts Committees are all taking up the cannabis reform bill, and advocates expect it will be cleared for a final floor vote on Wednesday.

Show Notes: Welcome to Ep. 132.  Here in a bit I’ll play a conversation I had with Rev. Mary Moreno Richardson.  I hope your Thanksgiving was awesome, mine was great but I had too much food.  I ate so much, I wasn’t hungry until dinner time the next day.  Shout out to pastor Steve for dropping off the bird.  

Strain of the Week:    Zweet Tartz – cross of ZOZ5 x Sweet Cherry Pie.  Flavors/aromas It does have these lemon, cherry, piney notes.  The label says it was 30% THC but it didn’t feel like it to me, a 30% should have given me more couch lock and I didn’t.  I think it’s a Zkittlez family member and as far as I can tell, this is NOT the same as the Sweet Tart which is a cross of Purple Thai X Afghani X ATF strains.

Conversations with: I had this idea of having a series of conversations about “Cannabis and Religion” with different religious leaders.  It’s not as easy as I thought it would be easy to get religious leaders to talk publicly about their personal opinions on cannabis, drugs and the war on drugs. 

I appreciate Rev. Mary Moreno Richardson who is a retired Episcopal reverend  talking to me not just about cannabis but also about some of the different experiences she’s had and works she’s done.

Show Notes: Welcome to Ep. 129.  I was out at Lake Casitas and recorded this episode while I was there.  Sorry about the wind noise, the rain rolled in. 

 I hope everyone had a good Halloween and Dia de los Muertos.  The election, which states got legal cannabis.  And an IPM question.  Product review “Peach Ring” batter, thanks to Sespe Creek Collective in Ojai for sending that over.  A word about dab straws/ nectar collectors, sticky teeth.  Congrats to Justin Benton for his new podcast The Miracle Plant.  Yellow sticky traps and cotton balls.

Strain of the Week:  Gorilla Snacks – the internet says it’s a cross of of GG4 and Guinness, a Scooby Snacks F3 backcross.  23% THC  It has a strong aroma with pungent notes of pine, spicy musk and some sweetness at the end.  It was a fun, happy, chatty, high, no racy feeling.  It was a bit distracting   

Social Media:   IPM Spider Mites (SM) during flowering @lonestar_grows.  They’re a common pest that is easy to miss because they don’t fly so yellow sticky cards don’t give you a clear picture of SM pest pressure.  Regular bush bean plants do very well at attracting mites and help me monitor them better.  Keep bean plants in a small pot or cup that can be removed for the grow space. I also go for predator, ladybug common but seasonal.  I use Green Lacewing eggs/larvae because they’re available to me from RinconVitova.  Predatory mites like Phytoseiulus persimilis and Amblyseius californicus, and a predatory midge called Feltiella acarisuga can be put out as soon as you see spider mites on the bean plants.  I don’t spray anything on my flower plants, doesn’t matter how many weeks of flower are in.  The moisture could help certain molds and fungus take hold and ruin the bud.  It could also change the taste of the bud.  A buddy of mine swears by pyrethrum foggers but no later than week two of flower because it could leave a taste.  The most important thing to do is break down and clean the grow space.  Figure out how they got in and what helped them thrive.  Start your IPM with correcting that and build from there.  

Yellow sticky traps  –  mimic a dying weak leaf or mimic a yellow flower.  

• Cinnamon Oil – thrips, leafminers, Japanese beetles
• Melissa Oil – fungus gnats, thrips, horse flies, deer flies
• Lemon Oil – fungus gnats, mealybugs, scale, thrips, Japanese beetles
• Peppermint Oil – Cucumber beetle
